Far Manager contains its own file viewer, text files can be edited via a built-in editor and an extensive menu takes care of almost everything else you need. Not that you will often use this context menu after some habituation. The fact that mouse control is supported – so that you can move files from one panel to another – and that the context menu opens the familiar Explorer menu, is to blame. The Far Source open source program may be text-based, but the interface looks pretty user-friendly. We already tell you that with F9 you get to see a menu that opens the way to numerous options. At the bottom you will find a command line as well as a row of function keys.
You end up in a text console with graphic allures and – Microsoft can learn something from that – with a double navigation window. If the use of the command line does not scare you and you find the Explorer often a bit cumbersome or limited, then get acquainted with the still further developed Far Manager (file & archive manager). It is a powerful file manager that you can control via keys and that embraces a nice collection of plug-ins.
Do the names Norton Ghost and Norton Commander tell you anything else? Then you must have spent quite some time computing and Far Manager definitely deserves your attention.
